日經新聞15日報導，日本汽車大廠三菱汽車(Mitsubishi Motors)社長益子修接受專訪時表示，為了開拓需求持續擴大的東南亞市場，該公司計劃投下約400億日圓於2016年度在印尼興建一座新工廠，藉此將印尼年產能擴增至約20萬台，將達現行的2倍。上述新廠完工量產後，三菱汽車於亞洲的汽車生產比重將突破50%(目前為48%)。

據日經指出，三菱汽車目前於印尼市場的市佔率為13%，僅次於豐田汽車和大發工業位居第3位。日經表示，東南亞車市在最近10年來成長了1倍，其中泰國及印尼就扮演者火車頭角色。日經指出，2012年日系車廠於東南亞市場的汽車銷售量達273萬台，持平於中國大陸市場的水準、僅次於美國市場。

豐田位於泰國、大發位於印尼的新工廠將於今年度內(2014年3月底前)啟用量產。
