看準澳洲平面媒體舉步維艱，英國衛報（The Guardian）27日在澳洲推出新的網路版，承諾帶給讀者獨立的觀點，並以多媒體方式呈現。

衛報網路版上線首日，刊出澳洲總理吉拉德的獨家專訪。衛報並且承諾，不會在新網站設立付費牆，有別於澳洲其他媒體公司的作法。

主宰澳洲媒體市場的Fairfax與新聞公司（News Limited）愈來愈要求線上讀者付費，衛報採取的策略則恰好相反。

衛報表示，有110萬澳洲人經常瀏覽衛報的全球網站，使得澳洲成為該報繼英國、美國以及加拿大之後的第四大數位讀者市場。

市場研究公司Comscore的數據顯示，以全球瀏覽人數計算，衛報是全球第三大報紙網站，去年12月有3,890萬人瀏覽，緊追每日郵報（Daily Mail）的5,000萬人與紐約時報（NYT）的4,860萬人。
