美國趨勢：小學能力分組教學

紐約時報10日報導，1980年代末期之前，美國小學多半按學生能力分組教學，但在1980年代末期到1990年代之後，能力分組逐漸式微，因為批評者指責此舉對能力較差的學生不公平，且造成強者更強、弱者更弱。但美國知名的教育統計機構「國家教育進展評量」（NationalAssessment of Educational Progress）發表的一份美國小學四年級教師調查發現，目前小學階段閱讀及數學課程能力分組已是新趨勢。在閱讀方面，71%的受訪教師表示按學生能力分組，較1998年的28%大幅增加；在數學方面，61%的受訪教師說他們以學生能力分組教學，也遠高於1996年的40%。
