南開大學教授孟昭連在《南京師大學報》(社會科學版)2013年第3期發表長篇論文《破解『之乎者也』千古之迷——文言語氣詞非口語說》。他經過對古代漢語中語氣詞考證分析，發現『之乎者也』之類的所謂『文言語氣詞』，並非古人口語，而只是一種書面語符號，它的功能是提示於此斷句，並提示此句的語氣聲調，基本上相當於現代的標點符號；而且這一類詞在閱讀時是不需要發聲的。

根據人民網報導，此一結論對傳統語言學中的『文字是語言的客觀反映』觀念，是一個衝擊。

中國古代主要書面語是文言體，也就是帶『之乎者也』之類辭匯的文體。研究語言的專家認為，文言既是古代的書面語，也是秦漢之前的口語，那時的古人就是操著『之乎者也』說話的。孟昭連以有力的論據與邏輯推理，否定了這種成見。按照語言學界共識，西周之前漢語是沒有語氣詞的，『之乎者也』等是在春秋戰國時期才在書面語中開始出現的，並且在二三百年間很快達到完備的程度。孟昭連置疑，一個民族的語言，在二三百年間突然出現了一整套以前所沒有的語氣詞，那麼它出現的最初動因是什麼？在古代傳播手段相當落後的情況下如何在全民口語中迅速普及？又是如何進一步在戰國書面語中廣泛運用的？他分析認為，如此短的時間內在口語中出現了一套完備的語氣詞，不符合語言發展規律，因此也是不可信的。
