葛洛斯30日接受CNBC電視網訪問時說，他是效法鋼鐵鉅子兼慈善家卡內基（Andrew Carnegie）而作這項承諾；卡內基說，富人帶著錢過世是丟臉的事。卡內基在1889年寫的文章「財富福音書」（The Gospel of Wealth）中說，富人有義務捐錢改善社會。

億萬富豪艾康（Carl Icahn）上周曾和葛洛斯在推特（Twitter）的貼文中，彼此敦促對社會作更多貢獻。葛洛斯要艾康別再催促蘋果執行庫藏股，應多學習蓋茲夫婦，把更多時間用來做善事。艾康則提議葛洛斯學他，加入蓋茲和巴菲特發起的「捐獻誓言」（Giving Pledge）團體。該團體鼓勵全球富豪捐出大部分財產作慈善。
